National Trust silver birch with some glorious spalting going on.

Spalting occurs from fungi inside the wood.

There is a lot of silver birch - betula pendula - in Ashridge, it is a pioneer species so is one of the first to colonise a new patch of land. Around Ashridge a lot of common land was stopped being used for animal grazing so the silver birch moved in, in a hundred years they might be replaced by beeches and oaks.
