This box is made from Sweet Chestnut wood felled at National Trust's Ashridge Estate, Herts.

The shading effect on the wood is made by a process called 'ebonising'.  I create this effect by rubbing a mixture of vinegar and iron onto the box which causes a chemical reaction with the tannin in the wood, the result turns the wood fibres black.

Every Hertswood product comes with a handwritten card containing care instructions and explaining more about the wood and where it came from.

The box measures approximately 100mm in height and 90mm in diameter.
