These boxes are made from Sweet Chestnut wood felled at National Trust's Ashridge Estate, Herts.
The shading effect on the wood is made by a process called 'ebonising'. I create this effect by rubbing a mixture of vinegar and iron onto the box which causes a chemical reaction with the tannin in the wood, the result turns the wood fibres black.
As with all handmade wooden items, there are slight variations in size and grain which makes each product unique.
Every Hertswood product comes with a handwritten card containing care instructions and explaining more about the wood and where it came from.
The boxes vary slightly in size, they measure approximately 85mm in length and 70mm in diameter.
