I have found that information on trees is readily available, as is information on which woods are good for woodturning and carving. I am yet to find a source of cultural and scientific information about trees and wood written for a woodturner or carver.
So this is my humble attempt at such a thing. For lack of being able to think of a suitably amusing portmanteau, I am calling it Tree School for now.
In these electronic pages, you will be able to find my tips on tree identification, woodturning and carving use, cultural and mythological information, food and medicinal values and anecdotal delights. You will also be able to find a bibliography of books and online references that I have found very useful and endlessly insightful. Bear in mind this is UK based information with mostly UK based trees.
I will begin with woods I have turned or carved and will endeavour to take photos throughout the year.
Please click on a tree in the category menu from the sidebar on the right, or click here, to begin with the mighty Oak, and do check back every now and again as I will be adding to the list as time ticks on…
